The name Skyler is a modern spelling of the surname Schuyler which is now often used as a given name in the United States. Schuyler means "scholar" in Dutch or "learned one" in Scandinavian. The surname Schuyler was originally introduced in America by 17th century settlers arriving in New York. It became a given name in honor of prominent members of the New York family, such as Philip Schuyler, and so became the given name of Schuyler Colfax, the 17th Vice President of the United States.

Skyler is a now being given fairly often as a name to both male and female infants in the United States. Along with its common spelling variant, Skylar, it can be abbreviated as Skye or Sky.
