The state of Florida requires anyone registering a motor vehicle to carry a minimum of $10,000 in personal injury liability insurance and $10,000 in personal property damage insurance.
Florida is a no-fault state, therefore, it requires every registered vehicle to carry enough coverage to ensure that damages to other people, including death, and property be adequately covered.
If you are moving to Florida and you have coverage in another state, you will need to obtain a Florida licensed insurance agent to switch your current auto insurance to a Florida policy.
Should you cancel or let your insurance lapse and maintain a registered vehicle, you are subject to suspension of your driver's license, registration and license plate. The suspension can reach up to three years, or until you provide proof of insurance to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Fines for reinstatement can run up to $500, depending upon how many times you have let your insurance lapse. In addition, when you reinstate your insurance with your insurance agent or company, you may be required to pay for much of your policy premium in advance, rather than allowing monthly payments.
Motorcycles are not required to be insured in the state of Florida.
Vehicles that are not driven and are stored, but are registered, are still required to be insured at the minimum state levels of insurance. If you are going to store a vehicle for any length of time, you will need to surrender your license plate to the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of storage or risk a fine for being an uninsured motorist. A new plate will be issued when you are ready to drive the vehicle again.Driving under the influence in the state of Florida is illegal. A blood alcohol level of .08, or higher, will get you a ticket that imposes a fine of no less than $500. This first offense fine can reach up to $1,000. If the blood alcohol level is 1.5 or higher, or there is a minor in the vehicle, the fine starts at $1,000 and does not exceed $2,000.
The first conviction will require 50 hours of community service. There may be an additional fine of $10 per hour of service required. Additionally, probation or jail time may not exceed one year. Your vehicle may be impounded for 10 days. Jail time or alcohol rehabilitation is up to the court's discretion, but must be no more than six months if the blood alcohol level is 0.8.
Subsequent convictions mandate more severe penalties and fines.
