There is a long, involved history of how the logo was developed. Be sure to read the story of how the Starbucks siren became less naughty, here:

The wikipedia article will tell you briefly about how the mermaid lost her tail and her navel and chest were "cleaned up" because of an embarrassed elementary school principal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbucks
Starbucks is basically a coffee house.
It purchases and roasts whole bean coffees and sells them along with Italian style espresso beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, and coffee-related accessories and equipment -- primarily through its company-operated retail stores.
Here's what they say about themselves:
Starbucks purchases and roasts high-quality whole bean coffees and sells them along with fresh, rich-brewed, Italian style espresso beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, and coffee-related accessories and equipment -- primarily through its company-operated retail stores. In addition to sales through our company-operated retail stores, Starbucks sells whole bean coffees through a specialty sales group and supermarkets. Additionally, Starbucks produces and sells bottled Frappuccino® coffee drink and a line of premium ice creams through its joint venture partnerships and offers a line of innovative premium teas produced by its wholly owned subsidiary, Tazo Tea Company. The Company's objective is to establish Starbucks as the most recognized and respected brand in the world.
You can read more about them at the link below.
legend has it that Stabucks was named after a fomer school teacher of the founder who told the young student that he would not amount to anything in life. Upon the success of the company the founder visited his old school and Mr Starbuck to tell him of his success and remember his previous quotes every time he turned the street corner and saw a Starbucks coffee shop!
Starbuck is the name of a character in the 1851 novel Moby Dick by author Herman Melville.
"Moby Dick was indeed a book beloved of one of the Starbucks founders. He proposed naming the company Pequod, after the ship. "Pee-quod" was nixed by his partners, and they cast about for a name with some local flavor (local to Seattle, Washington). They came upon the name Starbo, from an old mining camp on Mt. Rainier, and liked it. Then the Moby Dick fan drew a phonetic connection between "Starbo" and the novel--the Pequod's First Mate named Starbuck. And Starbucks it was.
Perhaps in your local mall, Barnes and Noble, or even down the street from a local McDonald's. There is no knowing where Starbucks is, it basically depends on where you live.
It's their usual (but now updated) mermaid on a green circle.
