Tessera doesn't have to put nutritional labels on its packages. The company licenses a portfolio of more than 1,500 patented semiconductor packaging technologies; these designs enable semiconductor makers to produce high-performance packages for use in mobile phones, PDAs, PCs, and other electronic products. Licensees include big chip makers, such as Hitachi, Intel, and Toshiba, as well as leading semiconductor assemblers, such as ASE and Amkor, and cell phone makers. Tessera has taken on the likes of Micron Technology, Motorola, Sharp, and Texas Instruments in lawsuits defending its patents and won settlements from them.
