tw telecom was founded as Time Warner Communications in 1993 as a joint venture between U S West and Time Warner Cable. Time Warner Telecom rapidly evolved into a business provider specializing in fiber-based last mile solutions.

Since 1997, the company has delivered communications services to medium and large business customers, including carriers and governmental entities. It also expanded its offerings from dedicated services into Internet, data and voice services. On July 1, 2008, the company changed its name to tw telecom.
tw telecom operates in 75 markets nationwide, with more than 27,000 route miles of fiber and more than 10,000 commercial buildings "on-net". They operate two National Operations centers, 1 in Denver, CO the other in O'Fallon, MO, that maintain and monitor the network 24/7.
For the 2009 NORAD Tracks Santa season, tw telecom partnered with NORAD and the NORAD Tracks Santa program to provide voice, data and Internet services. For Christmas Eve tw telecom voice services, using their nationwide IP backbone, ensured that all the children and young at heart who called the NORAD Tracks Santa hotline got through to receive the most up-to-date information on Santa's location.
