Topsham is a town in Sagadahoc
County, Maine, United States. The population was
9,100 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area
of 91.8 km² (35.4 mi²). 82.9 km² (32.0 mi²) of it
is land and 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²) of it (9.62%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000,
there were 9,100 people, 3,424 households, and 2,461 families residing in the town. The population density was 109.7/km² (284.2/mi²). There were 3,573 housing units at an average density of
43.1/km² (111.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.19% White, 1.33% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.24% of the population.
There were 3,424 households out of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.0% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% were
non-families. 22.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from
45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males.
For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $47,682, and the median income for a family was $52,134. Males had a median
income of $35,943 versus $25,581 for females. The per capita income for the town was
$21,135. About 3.0% of families and 4.1% of the population were below the poverty
line, including 5.8% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
Education
Public schools in the area are operated by Maine School
Administrative District 75. There are two elementary schools, Williams-Cone School and Woodside Elementary. The middle
school is Mt. Ararat Middle School, and the high school is
Mt. Ararat High School.
