UzDaewooAvto was set up as a joint venture between Daewoo and the Uzbekistan government located in Asaka city, Andijan province, Uzbekistan. UzDaewooAuto was set up on a parity basis in 1992 by state-owned Uzbek car-maker Uzavtoprom and South Korean car-maker Daewoo Motor.

History

In 2005, the stake owned by the then bankrupt South Korean firm was taken over by Uzavtoprom (also known as Uzavtosanoat), which took full control of the company. Uzavtoprom bought Daewoo's stake for US$110 million, according to some media reports.

Production begun with Daewoo Matiz, Daewoo Nexia and Daewoo Damas (van). Currently Chevrolet Epica, Chevrolet Captiva, Chevrolet Lacetti and the new modified Daewoo Nexia II is being produced. Around half UzDaewoo's output is exported to Russia. The capacity of the plant is 200,000 cars per year.

The South Korean Daewoo firm is now owned by General Motors of the United States, which also has the rights to the brand. On 1st August 2007, the Uzbek government announced that it was in negotiations with General Motors to start the production of Chevrolet Rezzo and Chevrolet Epica. Also, the Chevrolet Captiva was then predicted to be produced for the local market only.

UzDaily.com [1] reported that the plant should have started production of new cars from 1 January 2008. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution to organize construction of new model of cars at UzDaewooAuto.

The document production of the Chevrolet Epica (Daewoo Toska), sports-utility ("SUV") Chevrolet Captiva (Daewoo Winstrom), people-carrier ("MPV") Chevrolet Tacuma (Daewoo Tacuma / Rezzo).

The resolution said that UzDaewooAuto will produce 1,008 units of Epica, 696 units of Captiva and 888 units of Tacuma.

The recent report said that GM Daewoo plans to buy some stake in UzDaewooAuto. The reports said the sides are holding talks.
