(b Kroměříž, 28 May 1883; d Beroun, 16 March 1961). Czech conductor and violinist. After study at the Prague Conservatory he was briefly leader of the Berlin PO. From 1906 he worked in Prague and in 1919 became chief conductor of the Czech PO, with which he toured widely; from 1935 he was also head of opera at the National Theatre. He brought Janáček's operas into the repertory and was noted for his interpretation of Smetana, Dvořák and Suk.
