ViroPharma didn't want to wait until its drugs were approved to start making money, so instead it bought an approved one. The development-stage firm discovers drugs to combat RNA viruses, a category that includes cytomegalovirus (CMV) in transplant patients and gastrointestinal infections. To finance its development, however, the company acquired the antibiotic Vancocin, which treats conditions of staph and other infections, from Eli Lilly. Vancocin is distributed through wholesalers in the US. The company also markets Cinryze, a drug made from human plasma to combat angiodema (swelling of the skin or hives).
