Westfield is a city in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,911 at the 2006 census. The Westfield city government estimated in 2008 that the population of the city exceeded 24,000 residents. Westfield is included in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area.

Geography

Westfield is located at 40°1′56″N 86°7′44″W / 40.03222°N 86.12889°W / 40.03222; -86.12889 (40.032266, -86.129015)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.6 square miles (19.8 km²), of which, 7.6 square miles (19.8 km²) of it is land and 0.13% is water.

History

Westfield was founded on May 6, 1834 by Asa Bales, Ambrose Osborne, Simon Moon and Simon Barker all Quakers from North Carolina. It is believed that the town was planned as a stop on the Underground Railroad with many families of the Quaker and Wesleyan Methodist churches supporting the cause. When the laws against aiding escaped slaves were harshened, part of the Westfield Quakers split into the Anti-Slavery Friends meeting. [1]

On January 1, 2008, the town of Westfield incorporated into a city with Andy Cook sworn in as the new mayor.[2] With recent annexations in the southern part of its containing township (Washington Township) and rapid population growth in areas already occupied by the pre-existing town, the city government estimates Westfield's population to be at roughly 24,000 residents.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 9,293 people, 3,386 households, and 2,454 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,218.2 people per square mile (470.3/km²). There were 3,606 housing units at an average density of 472.7/sq mi (182.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 93.60% White, 1.00% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.83% of the population.

There were 3,386 households out of which 46.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the town the population was spread out with 32.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 40.0% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $52,963, and the median income for a family was $65,208. Males had a median income of $45,388 versus $26,864 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,160. About 2.3% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.5% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.
