Wilmer is a city in Dallas County, Texas,
United States. The population was 3,393 at the 2000 census.
Union Pacific's Union Pacific Dallas Intermodal Terminal is located partly in
the city of Wilmer and partly in the city of Hutchins [1]. The
shipping facility, was built by AUI Contractors LP, Prime Rail Interests Inc. and Halff Associates, is a 70 million
U.S. dollar project.
Geography
Wilmer is located at 32°35′27″N, 96°40′57″W (32.590743,
-96.682619)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area
of 16.3 km² (6.3 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,393 people, 958 households, and 714 families residing in
the city. The population density was 207.9/km² (538.9/mi²). There were 1,078 housing
units at an average density of 66.1/km² (171.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 47.89% White, 23.43% African American, 1.12% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 24.55% from other races, and 2.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 41.50% of the population.
There were 958 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% were
non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 3.23 and the average family size was 3.71.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from
45 to 64, and 5.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 115.6 males.
For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,843, and the median income for a family was $35,820. Males had a median
income of $26,742 versus $22,007 for females. The per capita income for the city was
$12,167. About 16.3% of families and 18.8% of the population were below the poverty
line, including 26.5% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
Education
Wilmer is served by the Dallas Independent School District.
For the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 school years, Wilmer is served by several schools located in Dallas. They include Bushman,
Darrell, Ervin, and Starks Elementary Schools (in four separate attendance zones), Zumwalt Middle School, and A. Maceo Smith High School. The zoning will remain for the subsequent school year.
Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District used to serve
Wilmer. WHISD was closed after spring 2005.
