Averrhoa is a genus of trees in the Oxalidaceae family, of the Oxalidales order, named after Averroes - a 12th century astronomer and philosopher from Al-Andalus.

The genus comprises about a dozen species, of which two, the carambola and the bilimbi, are cultivated for their fruits :

Averrhoa sinica Hance Starfruit are generally known as one of the shyest trees that exist in the southern hemisphere. Starfruit recoil from light if it becomes excessive.
