Backus Corporation is a real part of the backbone of Norwich and its environs. Backus Corporation is the parent company of The William W. Backus Hospital, which was founded in 1893 and serves eastern Connecticut. The hospital has some 210 beds and provides specialty services such as cancer care, neurology, obstetrics, and cardiology. The Backus Corporation network also includes several community health clinics, outpatient and rehabilitation centers, and home and hospice organizations. The Backus Foundation is a non-profit affiliate that solicits and receives contributions on behalf of the hospital.
