  1. To cross out with lines or other markings. See synonyms at erase.
  2. To annul or invalidate.
  3. To mark or perforate (a postage stamp or check, for example) to indicate that it may not be used again.
  4. To equalize or make up for; offset: Today's decline in stock price canceled out yesterday's gain.
  5. Mathematics.
    1. To remove (a common factor) from the numerator and denominator of a fractional expression.
    2. To remove (a common factor or term) from both sides of an equation or inequality.
  6. Printing. To omit or delete.

Advertising: terminate an advertisement or contract.

Fulfillment: customer request to cancel an order or stop service on a continuity or a subscription; also called kill. If it was a paid account, a refund is generated. Canceled magazine subscriptions generate a refund equal to the value of the remaining service. See also credit cancellation.

 

Termination of a policy. Contract may be terminated by an insured or insurer as stated in the policy. If the insurance company cancels a policy, any unearned premiums must be returned. If an insured cancels the policy, an amount less than the unearned premiums is returned, reflecting the insurance company's administration costs of placing the policy on its books. Usually this term is applied only in property and disability insurance.
