(CHARacter) In programming, the mnemonic for declaring a variable or array that holds alphanumeric characters. Pronounced "char" or "car," the C statement char OneChar; declares a single-byte variable named "OneChar," which holds one character. The declaration char InBuff[1000]; reserves a 1,000 byte array named "InBuff."

A fish belonging to the genus Salvelinus and related to both the trout and salmon. The Dolly Varden trout and the Mackinaw trout (or lake trout) are actually members of the char family. Char live in the icy waters (both fresh and marine) of North America and Europe. The arctic char, which has become more commercially available in recent years, is now raised on government-sponsored fish farms in Iceland. It has a pink flesh with a flavor and texture that's a cross between trout and salmon. Char can be baked, broiled, fried, grilled, poached or steamed. See also fish.

character

A single inscribed mark, symbol, etc., most usually in Western culture an alphabetic letter, a numeric digit or punctuation symbol. Hence by extension also the minimal explicit space that separates words, etc. The quantitative measure of a character depends on the size of the alphabet to be covered, provisions for unique versus dual representation, and any in-built self-checking capacity. In early telegraphy one character equalled five bits net, but one visible character could require two transmitted characters because of figure/letter duality (e.g. T and 5 were represented by the same pattern of 5 bits), differentiated by the last preceding letter-shift else figure-shift character. In modern computers and telecommunications one character was five then six bits (with upper/lower case duality hence shift characters), but now is usually eight bits (= 1 byte), allowing unambiguous coverage of numeric digits, the lower- and upper-case alphabet, plus punctuation and many other symbols.

Any of several freshwater food and game fishes (genus Salvelinus) of the salmon family, distinguished from the similar trout by light, rather than black, spots; by a boat-shaped, rather than flat, vomer (bone) on the roof of the mouth; and by having teeth on the front of the vomer rather than on the shaft. Char often have smaller scales than their relatives. The Arctic char, of North America and Europe, inhabits the Arctic and adjacent oceans and enters rivers and lakes to breed. It may weigh 15 lbs (7 kg) or more. The brook trout, Dolly Varden trout, and lake trout are native North American char.

Wikipedia: char (disambiguation)

Char is the solid material that remains after light gases (eg.Coal gas) and tar (eg.Coal tar) have been driven-out or released from a carbonaceous material, during the initial stage of combustion, which is known as carbonization, charring, devolatilization or pyrolysis. Further stages of efficient combustion (with or without char deposits) are known as gasification reactions, ending quickly when the reversible gas phase water gas shift reaction reaches equilibrium.
