1. One that agrees to furnish materials or perform services at a specified price, especially for construction work.
2. Something, especially a muscle, that contracts.

One who contracts to do work for another. An Independent Contractor makes an agreement to do a specific piece of work, retaining control of the means and method of doing the job; neither party has the right to terminate the contract at will. Examples of independent contractors are physicians, lawyers, construction contractors, and others engaged in a profession in which they offer their services to the public. Federal income taxes and Social Security taxes are not withheld by employers of independent contractors; independent contractors are subject to Self-Employment Tax.

One who contracts to supply specific goods or services, generally in connection with development of a property.
Example: Abel is developing a residential Subdivision. In the course of the project, Abel secures the services of various contractors, such as landscapers, carpenters, plumbers, and architects.

One who undertakes responsibility for the performance of construction work, including the provision of labor and materials, in accordance with plans and specifications and under a contract specifying cost and schedule for completion of the work; the person or organization responsible for performing the work, 1 and identified as such in the owner-contractor agreement.

One who is a party to a contract; also one who contracts to do the work for another. An independent contractor is "one who makes an agreement with another to do a piece of work, retaining in himself control of the means, method and manner of producing the result to be accomplished, neither party having the right to terminate the contract at will." 45 N.E. 2d 342, 345. A general contractor in a building contract context is one who contracts directly with the owner of the property upon which the construction occurs, as distinguished from a subcontractor who would only deal with one of the general contractors.
