One who contracts to do work for another. An Independent Contractor makes an agreement to do a specific piece of work, retaining control of the means and method of doing the job; neither party has the right to terminate the contract at will. Examples of independent contractors are physicians, lawyers, construction contractors, and others engaged in a profession in which they offer their services to the public. Federal income taxes and Social Security taxes are not withheld by employers of independent contractors; independent contractors are subject to Self-Employment Tax.
