Psychoanalysis: Coprophilia

The term "coprophilia" is used to describe a predilection for fecal and related matters. On January 4, 1898, Freud wrote to Wilhelm Fliess: "Today I am sending you No. 2 of the "dreckological" reports . . ." (1985, p. 291). In creating this neologism from the German word Drek, meaning mud, filth, excrement, he was, according to Max Schur (1975), testifying to the abundant amount of anal material in his self-analysis at the time.

Food can remind children of excrement: "He protests loudly—in the form of overcompensation—the successful overcoming of his coprophiliac inclinations," Freud explained to his pupils (Wiener Psychoanalystiche Verinigung,1962-1975, p. 177). Repression of an olfactive coprophilic pleasure can determine the choice of a fetish (Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, 1905d). In the same vein, on February, 24, 1910, he wrote to Karl Abraham: "I regard coprophilic olfactory pleasure as being the chief factor in most cases of foot and shoe fetishism" (1965a, p. 87).

He later indicated, in his article On the Universal Tendency to Debasement in the Sphere of Love (1912d), that when man changed to the erect position he raised his smelling organ above ground level. It was then that "the coprophilic instinctual components [ . . . ] proved incompatible with our aesthetic standards of culture" (p. 189). Reflecting in the same article on sexual impotence of a psychic origin, he stated: "The excremental is all too intimately and inseparably bound up with the sexual; the position of the genitals—inter urinas et faeces—remains the decisive and unchangeable factor" (p. 189).

Coprophilia takes on an entirely different meaning in the light of work on mourning and the notion of loss. Reflecting on the subject of mourning, Karl Abraham (1924) detected in certain rites the link between loss and attachment to the content of the intestines. Given the specific features of the two opposite pleasures of anal eroticism, retention and expulsion, he distinguished the same opposition in the sadistic instincts. There would then be a link between the expulsion of the anal object and the melancholy that results from the expulsion of a person. Psychoanalysis thus facilitated the establishment of a link between melancholy, obsessional neuroses, and coprophilia. Abraham went on to write: "The coprophagic instinct seems to me to conceal a symbolism that is typical of melancholy" (1924, p. 444). The motion of introjection can then be considered as a psychic mechanism that is of central importance for melancholics.

Coprophilia (from Greek κόπρος, kópros—excrement and φιλία, filía—liking, fondness), also called scat,[1] is the paraphilia involving sexual pleasure from feces.[2][3] In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV-TR), it is classified under 302.9 Paraphilia Not Otherwise Specified and has no diagnostic criteria other than a general statement about paraphilias that says "the diagnosis is made if the behavior, sexual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning." Furthermore, the DSM-IV-TR notes, "Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in sexual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships)." Although not all coprophiles would necessarily be sadomasochists, little data on the prevalence of this behavior is available except from studies of the SM community. A study of 164 male sadomasochists from Finland from two sadomasochism clubs[4] found that 18.2% had engaged in coprophilia; 3% as a sadist, 6.1% as a masochist, and 9.1% as both. Eighteen percent of heterosexuals in the study pool had tried coprophilia; 17% of homosexuals had (no statistically significant difference between heterosexuals and homosexuals). In a separate article,[5] a subset of 12 men from that study who engaged in bestiality was analyzed and found that 54.5% of the 12 men had engaged in coprophilic behaviors, compared with only 8.3% of 12 of the men who did not engage in bestiality who matched up logically with each of the 12 who did. (A matched pairs study was done.)

Cleveland steamer

The Cleveland steamer is a colloquial term for a form of coprophilia, where one defecates on another's chest, then rocks back and forth imitating the motion of a steamroller. Although the term 'Cleveland Steamer' is in reference to the specific world first location of this sexual move, it is said to have first been founded during the early 1920's in dispute.[6] [7] The term received news attention through its use in a U.S. Congress staff hoax email and being addressed by the United States Federal Communications Commission.[8]

Popular Culture

  • In 2002, the Detroit, Michigan talk radio show Deminski & Doyle began an educational half-hour discussion of urban-legendary sex acts with the statement, "Try to describe carefully what a 'Cleveland steamer' would be...."[9] Fifteen months later, the Federal Communications Commission proposed a fine of $27,500 to the station's owner, Infinity Broadcasting, through a Notice of Apparent Liability (NAL)[10] that specifically referenced Cleveland steamer in the notice.[9]
  • In 2005, a young staffer for U.S. Representative Jane Harman made news by sending around a hoax email stating that one of Lyndon LaRouche's followers "decided to drop her pants and plopped a Hot Cleveland Steamer on our carpet. House Janitorial Services is currently cleaning up this wretched filth."[11] The email was sent in response to a string of e-mail messages poking fun at LaRouche followers.[11] By the end of the year, the event was listed as part of the best of Heard on the Hill (HOH).[12]
  • In Australia's Big Brother in 2005, the housemates discussed the process of the Cleveland steamer, in the "Uncut" version of the show (later named "Adults Only"; taken off the air in 2006).[13]
  • The parody band Tenacious D song Rock Your Socks references coprophilia in their lyric, "All we're askin' you to do / Is drop trough / And squeeze out / A Cleveland Steamer on my chest (Ooh!)"[14]
  • In the episode of Family Guy, Season 3, Episode 9, Mr. Saturday Knight. Peter Griffin has lost his job at The Happy-Go Lucky Toy Factory and in one scene is working as a street prostitute. Lois and the family pull up in their car and Peter proceeds to ask Lois if she would like 'a Cleveland Steamer'.[15]
  • In the animated television series Metalocalypse, William Murderface from the fictional death metal band named Dethklok is apparently a coprophiliac. This information is revealed during a psychological profile.[16]
