Daniel Marhely

Daniel Marhely, a 27 year-old self-made man and proud of it, left school at 16 to focus on his passion for the web. In 2000, he headed the web department of the Agrafe communications agency. In 2002, he decided to focus exclusively on web development. Two years later, he co-founded the dating website “Lovelee.com”. In 2006, he co-founded the company Aliza Medias. At the same time, he was exchanging music with his friends, a lot of music with a lot of friends, sharing his musical passions, tastes and moods. He started Blogmusik, a streaming music site. At that time, the website did not meet with Sacem*’s approval. So, he decided to stop Blogmusik and negotiate directly with rights owners. On August 22nd 2007, a historical agreement was signed with royalty collecting agencies. [13] Blogmusik was reborn Deezer.com.

Strategy

BEING GLOBAL

Deezer’s web-based technology has enabled it to be a mass-market solution with ease of access, particularly important in developing countries where prior downloading of an application is not common practice.

Deezer’s global partnership with Facebook fits into its development strategy: 79% of Facebook users are from outside the United States (source: Comscore, April 2011). Deezer and Facebook have created the global music experience: Facebook brings its vision of the role of music within the social media experience and Deezer’s integration allows users to access, discover and share unlimited music easily.

ACTING LOCAL

Deezer’s technology has been designed to be adaptable at local level.

Language and editorial content are customised to reflect the cultural diversity and tastes of each country.

Deezer will thus be capable of appearing as a localised solution for listening to music. Deezer built local distribution networks with several brands (telecom operators, manufacturers, banks, retailers, etc…) in order to accelerate its development. Deezer is able to provide all these partners with solutions in terms of pricing and co-branding: for instance, partnerships with Orange in France and in the United Kingdom or with Belgacom in Belgium.

Artist Promotion

Deezer enable users to discover new artists and new trends in music independently, without pressure from music publishers and with no financial axe to grind. Deezer's editorial department listens to a lot of new tracks every week in every country in the world and has sole choice of what it wants to provide on the website. Deezer must keep its freedom of voice, of criticism, of enthusiasm.

Many artists are spontaneously enthusiastic about the services offered by Deezer because it is the only Global Music Service in the world. In Particular, Deezer has built a tool for artist promotion with Facebook: For the first time, artists will be able to spontaneously share, on a worldwide basis, their new songs, tastes and playlists with their fans without needing promotional videos Artists will then be able to refocus their relationships with their fans towards music, rather than relying on gimmicks (eg: games, contests, etc.)

Features

Search

It allows to search by tracks, albums and artists with search features across 15 million tracks of all musical style. Some artists are not available in Deezer because of licensing restrictions by the record labels: Francis Cabrel, The Beatles are some examples.

Create

Users can create their own library by setting up playlists and share them, or edit them together with other users. They can also ”follow” an artist, add an album, a track or a radio channel into its library. The Deezer service demonstrates distinct differences from its competitor like Me and Spotify. With Deezer service, users can listen tracks they like as many times they want. It is not limited to 5 tracks per user (Universal Trial [15]) Deezer’s technology allow the import of users’s MP3 from its local library and others music platforms like Soundcloud. The library created is available offline on every device (offline mode).

Focus on Editorial

Deezer provides access to innumerable editorials and a biography, enabling all users to find out everything about their chosen music through the “Smartradios”, creates a random playlists of songs from a specific artist. The main difference with services like Pandora is the possibility to skip the track. Additionally, with explanatory articles on 12 music genres for which the Deezer editorial team will have selected everything new :

  • the section “What’s hot”
  • the section “New releases”
  • the section “Deezer recommends”
  • the weekly playlist
  • the biographies

Deezer’s Editorial teams lead marketing artists’ campaigns to promote their songs on the service itself.

Deezer's objective is to extend its coverage to virtually all mobile terminals, in addition to car-radios and televisions.

  • Connected or not connected

Social

Deezer has integrated several social features. This evolution is a natural step in the fundamental shift in the music market from the ownership of music to the unlimited access of music. The social music movement empowers people to discover music online in the same way they do offline, through friends.

  • Outside Deezer

Facebook In September 2011, at f8 Facebook’s developer conference, Deezer announced its integration with Facebook Platform that allows people to discover music through their friends. The integration is also offered through iPad, iPhone, Android, Blackberry and WP7, so regardless of where a person listens to songs, they can share posts of that activity back to Facebook. After integrating their Deezer account with other social media profiles, the users can access their friends’ favorite music and playlists. Additionally, users can share music with Facebook friends through the use of the service's inbox. Deezer users are able to send tracks or playlists to friends who, in return, are able to access this music through their Deezer Account.
