Surface texture of paper. There are many types of finishes, including coated (see coated paper) or uncoated, dull (see dullcoated) through glossy, and smooth or textured. Smoothness is important for the high-quality halftone printing for which glossy coated paper is most often used; generally, the smaller the halftone dots, the smoother the finish required. Textured paper with a ribbed, leatherlike or textilelike surface is popular for stationery and book covers. Uncoated or rough-finish paper is usually used for offset lithography printing.

While all coated papers have a smooth surface texture, uncoated papers vary greatly in degree of smoothness. Uncoated paper also has a natural difference in the finish on each side caused by the way paper is manufactured. These two surface finishes are called the felt side and the wire side.
