USAGE NOTE   Flaunt as a transitive verb means "to exhibit ostentatiously": She flaunted her wealth. To flout is "to show contempt for": She flouted the proprieties. For some time now flaunt has been used in the sense "to show contempt for," even by educated users of English. This usage is still widely seen as erroneous and is best avoided.

Flaunt is a monthly American fashion culture magazine founded by the current editor-in-chief, Luis Barajas, and creative director, Jim Turner, also the founders of Detour magazine. Long Nguyen, a third founder and style director, also was working on Detour for four years. Flaunt was established in September 1998.

Inspiration

Inspired from the work of the 1950’s era magazine Flair (founder Fleur Cowles established in 1950), Barajas and Turner attempt to integrate paper work inserts and layouts into the magazine. Some insert examples include:

• Issue 65 (July 2005) with Elijah Wood/ Jessica Alba on the cover featured a paper doll cowboy insert created with art by David Weidman, who was best known for his work on the Fractured Fairy Tales portion of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (Jay Ward Productions)

• The cover for issue 8 (October 1999) featured a perforated face mask designed and drawn by David Bowie letting Flaunt readers become the “Thin White Duke” • Issue 5 (June/July 1999) with Adrien Brody/LeeLee Sobieski on the cover featured an insert allowing the reader to build their own paper air stream travel trailer complete with paper propane tanks

• Issue 15 (June/July 2000) featuring James Van Der Beek/Brittany Murphy included an insert that allowed the reader to build their own version of the well-known Eames lounge chair.

Distributed in over twenty nine countries including the United States, Mexico, and Canada each of Flaunt’s issues are themed, with recent examples being the Jewish Issue (Beastie Boys and Sarah Silverman) and Future Tense (Hayden Christensen and Bryce Dallas Howard). Flaunt also utilizes outserts or special edition covers quite often, which are then polybagged with the magazine. Recent examples include:

• Issue 75 (June/July 2006) that contains a black and white Beach Ball

• A comic book edition featuring Tobey Maguire (issue 34 May 2002) with a lenticular cover of Spider-Man, utilized paper similar to comic books, and "Flaunt Boy" of the month Bobby Hill from King of the Hill (Fox network)

• A bag of sand promoting the film, Sahara, featuring Penelope Cruz (Spring Fashion issue 62).
