grower grow'er n.
growingly grow'ing·ly adv.

USAGE NOTE   Grow has been used since medieval times as an intransitive verb, as in Our business has been growing steadily for 10 years. It has been used with an object since the 18th century, meaning "to produce or cultivate," as in We grow corn in our garden. But the transitive use applied to business and nonliving things is quite new. It came into full bloom during the 1992 presidential election, when nearly all the candidates were concerned with "growing the economy." The Usage Panel is decidedly less fond of this development than business leaders and politicans are. Eighty percent of the Panel rejects the phrase grow our business. The Panel is more accepting of, though not enthusiastic about, the phrase grow our way, perhaps because of way's established use in expressions like make our way and find our way: 48 percent accept We've got to grow our way out of this recession. The Panel has no affection for the odd but occasionally heard phrase grow down: 98 percent reject If elected, I shall do my utmost to grow down the deficit.

Plot summary

In the season premiere episode, Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the case of a city health inspector, found murdered in mysterious circumstances in an elevator. At first, the murder appears to be drugs-related, until Goren and Eames look below the surface. The detectives interview the victim's brother, a recently widowed medical examiner with a young daughter, as they learn that Nicole Wallace, Goren's long-standing nemesis, is romantically involved with the man. Then, they fear that the man's little girl might be Wallace's next victim. Detective Mike Logan joins the Major Case squad this time, but he is not pleased with being relegated to the background while Goren and Eames led the investigation, so Deakins makes an effort to find a partner for him.

Facts

  • The episode title, "Grow", refers to the personal growth of certain key characters as well as the status of the cancerous cells within the young girl in the episode.
  • The fifth season of Law & Order: Criminal Intent has a different format than the previous four seasons. Episodes for the fifth season alternate between Detectives Goren and Eames and Detectives Logan and Barek. Although Logan does appear in this episode, "Grow" is a Goren and Eames episode. Logan also appeared in the season 4 episode "Stress Position" when his girlfriend's name came up in connection with a case investigated by Goren and Eames.
  • Logan's appearances match that of NCIS character Ziva David (portrayed by Cote de Pablo) in the sense that even though Logan appeared in "Stress Position", he didn't formally join until this episode. Similarly, Ziva appears in "Kill Ari (Parts 1 and 2)", but doesn't join until the episode "Silver War".
