Deere & Company, more commonly known as John Deere, is a name that is globally synonymous with tractors and agricultural equipment. The bright green and yellow machinery, with its jumping deer logo, is easily recognized everywhere. Throughout the past 200 years, the company has grown into one of the most successful agricultural manufacturers in the world.

History of John Deere

Deere & Company has humble beginnings in February of 1804, when John Deere moved to Grand Detour, Illinois. Deere was an accomplished blacksmith and promptly opened a shop in his new home. Here, he made handheld farm implements and repaired equipment for local farmers. In 1836, Deere created a cast-steel plow that was pulled behind draft animals to increase efficiency in the fields. This was a large improvement over traditional iron or wood plows. By 1842, production of the cast-steel plow had grown so large that it caught the attention of another businessman, Leonard Andrus. Together, the two purchased a large manufacturing facility to create the plows. By 1912, Deere's sons had entered the mechanized tractor business. Their revolutionary designs quickly turned into an industry standard, and soon, every farmer in America wanted a John Deere tractor.

Within a period of roughly 200 years, Deere & Company grew from a small plow making business to the world's leading manufacturer of farm implements and agricultural equipment.

John Deere today

Today, Deere & Company still remains at the forefront of agricultural technology development. The company employs more than 47,000 people, in more than 27 countries across the world. It leads the industry in sales and produces a wide array of farm implements. The company makes traditional tractors, harvesters, plows and has even entered into the home consumer markets with ATVs and lawn mowers.

There are few brands that are more recognizable than John Deere. The man, John Deere, built his business by creating a better plow, and the company's revolutionary designs pushed it to the top of the industry. Its slogan, "Nothing runs like a Deere," still holds true today, as the company's products are well-known for their durability and ease of use.
