Everyone has gone high-tech these days: parents, students and even young children. While many seniors have hesitated to deal with cell phones, others have found that the advantages of mobile phones far outweigh the challenges. Unlike younger generations, most seniors have different needs, preferences and expectations for their phone service. The latest and greatest gadgetry is not particular attractive to older adults, and they benefit most from functional, simple and pared-down phone models.
The makers of Jitterbug were the first to produce a phone that was designed for and marketed to senior citizens. The phone is reasonably-priced at $99 and includes a one-time setup fee of $35. Service is prepaid, which means users are not bound to a contract if they are not satisfied with the experience. Every aspect of the Jitterbug was designed with seniors in mind. The keypad is simple and easy to read, and volume is especially loud and clear. Jitterbug also offers useful and affordable optional features. An additional $10 buys a comprehensive medication and prescription reminder application, and for another $4, seniors are granted access to a live nurse available 24/7.
The Just5 ($89.99) is a Jitterbug alternative and features many of the same functions, though Just5 does not include Internet access. However, it does offer a selection of useful applications that are senior-friendly. The phone is hearing aid-compatible, and a voice speaks each number when dialed on the keypad. Perhaps the most unique feature of Just5 is its emergency response capabilities: a built-in SOS button that, when pushed, immediately sends a text message to the user's stored emergency contact. Within moments, the phone places a call to each contact, then automatically activates the speakerphone.
While many seniors are wary of cellphones, few can deny that these phones are highly useful. Fortunately, cellphone manufacturers have provided an array of features and design elements with mature adults in mind. By including larger keypads, simplified controls and medical resources, these cellphones have opened up considerable new opportunities for seniors to connect.
