Car Maintenance Schedule

Car maintenance is seen as cheap insurance on an expensive investment. Following the recommended maintenance intervals for your car can keep your vehicle on the road longer, saving you money over the long term. Each manufacturer has a special schedule, but there are a few basic rules to follow regardless of the make and model.

Fluid changes

Changing fluids on your vehicle is one of the cheapest ways to ensure it is in great working order. These fluids act as lubricants for moving parts and prevent damage to the metal. Perhaps the most important maintenance you can do is to change the oil on a regular basis. Many newer cars can go up to 10,000 miles between changes. Some feel this is sufficient, while others feel that oil needs changing approximately every 3,000 miles. Another important fluid is transmission fluid. For manual transmissions, the interval can range from 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Automatic transmissions vary even more, with some requiring changes at 30,000 miles and others never need changing. Under heavy-duty use, it is recommended that the required interval is cut in half. Other important fluids are those used in differentials, power-steering systems, coolant systems and in-brake lines. These intervals can vary widely between makes and models, so it is best to consult a mechanic or the owner's manual.

Many consider regular fluid changes as the most important maintenance you can do on a vehicle. These important fluids include engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power-steering fluid and differential fluids.

Belts

Another important area of your vehicle are the drive belts. There are various belts attached to the engine and other accessory systems. The most important is the timing belt. Most timing belts need changing approximately every 50,000 to 70,000 miles. Without proper timing regulation, an engine can quickly fail. Other belts include those those that drive the vehicle's fans and pumps.

Air filter

The air filter on a vehicle is responsible for cleaning intake air before it is sent into the engine. Some recommend changing the filter at every oil change, but many filter manufacturers claim that their products can last up to 15,000 miles. Dirty air can cause engine stalls and introduce contaminants into internal compartments, where they can cause grinding between metal parts, and ultimately engine failure.

Other maintenance

There are many other important maintenance items on a car. You should replace tires when they become worn. In addition, brake pads, rotors and shoes also need changing when they start to deteriorate. Hoses need inspection for cracks and wear, as do the wires that control your vehicle's electrical components.

Properly caring for your vehicle can help it last to its full potential. Most maintenance items are relatively inexpensive. Those that occur at longer intervals, like timing belts, tend to command a higher price. Always consult your owner's manual or a mechanic to learn the exact intervals for your vehicle.
