Features to Look for in a GPS

If you are in the market for a global positioning system or GPS for your car, you're sure to be blown away by the wide range of choices that are available. By educating yourself about today's most useful GPS features, you can make a more informed purchase; the following information can help.

Text to Speech

"Text to speech" refers to a GPS's ability to read street names out loud. Old systems would display the street names on their screens. They couldn't speak the street names out loud and could only say things like "turn right ahead." This feature is useful because it allows you to keep your eyes on the road more easily; you do not have to glance back and forth at the GPS screen as often while getting directions.

Dynamic Search

Many modern GPS units simplify the task of inputting addresses. Instead of having to type in the entire name of a city, for example, the system will give you a list of likely options after you have types in the first handful of letters. This saves time and makes it easier to use these systems while you are on the road.

Lane Assistance

Being told to turn right ahead doesn't do you a lot of good if you are in the far-left lane. Lane assistance gives you a head's up regarding which lane makes the most sense based on your upcoming maneuvers. This feature is especially useful in urban areas, where roads can be several lanes wide.

Screen Size

Most GPS units have screens that range in size from two inches to seven inches. If you choose a screen that is too small, you will have trouble understanding the directions that it is giving you. It will also be more difficult to type in addresses using the touchscreen.

Visit a local store and test out various global positioning systems in person. This will give you a clear idea of which screen size is right for you.

Real-Time Traffic

If your budget allows it, you should consider a GPS that includes real-time traffic alerts. These alerts work in conjunction with your GPS so that it automatically routes you around traffic jams and other issues. Subscriptions are sometimes required.
