Gout is a painful affliction that affects joints similarly to a really bad case of arthritis. There are many symptoms associated with gout including redness, swelling, pain and inflammation of joints. Usually the big toe is the first joint effected, and then it spreads to other joints. Medication is helpful, but sufferers can also find relief by changing their diet to include certain foods and avoid others.

There are several guidelines to follow when it comes to choosing appropriate foods to keep gout under control. The first of these is eating complex carbohydrates. This means lots of fruits and vegetables as well as high-fiber whole grains. Proteins should not get cut out completely, but should make up only a small percentage of the diet. These proteins should come from lean meats such as chicken and turkey, as well as soy products. Avoid foods high in fat, especially animal fats. Choose things that are natural and not highly processed.

Gout is caused by an excessive amount of uric acid in the body. This uric acid is created when purines in food are broken down. To keep the symptoms of gout under control, it is important to avoid foods that are high in purines. One category of food and drink that is high in purines is alcohol. When afflicted with gout, avoid any type of alcohol. Fatty meats and seafood are the other group of foods to avoid. Lean chicken and turkey are the best sources of protein for those suffering from gout.

Gout is a serious condition that greatly effects the joints of its sufferers. It is treatable with medication, but is manageable by eating proper foods. When it comes right down to it, foods that are good for gout are also good for general overall health.
