Real estate agents bring together sellers and buyers of real estate and in so doing make commissions on sales that take place. They are knowledgeable about many different aspects of the real estate industry and can thus help customers make the right decisions as to their sales or purchasing of properties. The real estate agent field is an exciting and potentially lucrative career. Though it takes some time to get the necessary training, experience, and credentials to get involved in this career, these are fairly moderate and thus it is reasonably easy to get involved in this job area. If you like houses, finance, and dealing with people, this could be the job for you. The following are the basic steps to becoming a real estate agent.

Assure you Have Preliminary Skills

You need to insure you have certain fundamental skills and attributes before beginning to get into real estate. It is best if you have good communications skills, some sales skill, reasonable math skills, and some business background. If any of these areas are lacking, you can improve these areas with a little light study.

Make List of Real Estate Learning Organizations

The next thing to do is to find several establishments that offer real estate courses. Make a list of them so that you can compare their prices and other attributes as learning/credentialing institutions. A good way to compile such a list is to check with various professional organizations such as the Professional licensing Commission or your local chapter of the Real Estate Association. These courses may be offered by community colleges, career schools, professional associations, and so on. Compare these institutions for the length of their courses, the costs, their reputation, and so on.

Enroll in a Real Estate Course

Once you have found a real estate course that works for your budget, schedule, and that generally seems to be good course. Usually these courses require that you are at least 18 years old before enrolling. In some states this may be 21 years old. You usually also need to be a high school graduate. These courses will prepare you in all the aspects of being a real estate agent and often results in a certificate or diploma.

Get Background Check

The Real Estate Licensing Commission needs to conduct a background check on any individual going into the field to safeguard customers. A lot of money changes hands during real estate deals and it is probably a good thing that the industry is regulated. So allows this commission to conduct its inquiry into your past legal history.

Search for Real Estate Agencies that are Hiring

Once you have completed your course, you can begin looking for jobs at real estate agencies. There should be a number of real estate agencies in your area that are hiring new agents. Working next to more experience agents is an important part of your education. The experience you gain working in the field at an agency will gradually prepare you to do it on your own over time.

Work Several Years to Gain Experience

The time frame for doing your rookie work at an agency is usually in the two to five year range. This is about how long it takes to get to a master level in real estate. After you have worked for a few years in the business, you can consider going into business on your own. This can be a bit more lucrative, but may be somewhat more demanding in terms of responsibility and workload.

Get Broker's License and Set up Own Practice

When you feel it is finally time to go out on your own, you need to broker's license from your state. Contact the appropriate state agencies _ the Chamber of Commerce, the Labor Department, or even special real estate departments that you state may have. Once you have this credential and all the relevant experience you can work from your home or open a real estate office and begin making big commissions selling houses and other properties.
