Building a model car has been a favorite pastime for many people. Anyone can be a model car builder with just a few simple steps and the right supplies. You can find many different models at almost any hobby store.
After you have selected your model, the first thing you want to do is read the instructions. It will provide you with a brief history on the car you will be building as well as some suggestions on colors and finishing tips. The instructions will also give you the step by step process for the assembly using pictures and diagrams. After you have reviewed the instructions, begin taking inventory of all your parts. You will need a suitable workspace with enough room to lay out all the parts. A typical folding table will work fine.
Once your workspace is set up and all your parts are laid out, you are ready to begin assembly. You will first need to remove the parts from a plastic tree. Use a razor blade and a file to remove any unwanted plastic on the parts. The tire parts usually have more unwanted plastic and may need extra time to clean up. You can also use sandpaper to scuff the tires. This gives them a worn and authentic look.
After your parts are removed and detailed, you are now ready for assembly. You will need a plastic cement to glue the parts together. For chrome parts, be sure to use the edge of your razor blade to remove the chrome the surface that will be glued. Plastic cement does not adhere very well to a chrome finish. You may want to pre-fit your parts prior to gluing to ensure they fit well. Use a toothpick to apply the glue in small amounts. Once glue has been applied in the proper area, hold the pieces together for 20 seconds. You can also use a clamp to securely hold pieces in place. The glue will usually set in 5 minutes but takes 2 hours to completely dry.
When you are ready to paint, take 500 grit sandpaper and lightly scuff the body to remove the shiny plastic finish. Wash the surface with warm water and dish detergent. Let the surface air-dry or use compressed air. Take a medium size cardboard box as a paint booth. Be sure your workspace is well ventilated. Use a spray nozzle to apply your primer. Let the primer dry for one hour before painting. Apply two to three coats of paint after waiting 15-30 minutes between coats. Once you've applied your final coat, give it plenty of time to dry.
