How To Build A Shoe Rack

Statistics show that most women have an average of about 20 pairs of shoes, while about 15% of all women have more than 30 pairs. With this many shoes, it is almost essential to have some form of rack to keep them stored upon. People do not need to spend much money on a shoe rack. With just a few materials and a minimum of time, anybody can make a useful shoe rack for their shoes.

Sturdy Wooden Shoe Shelves

For these shoe shelves, people will need 2 to 4 pieces of wood that are half an inch thick and about 3 to 4 feet long. They may choose to paint the wood, stain it or leave it natural. First, they will need to attach some shelf brackets to a wall at a height that they can easily reach. They then need to fit the shelf holders into the brackets adjusting them to where they want the shelves to sit. The amount of shelves that people need depends on the number of shoes they have.

The great thing about this form of shoe storage is that people can add more shelves later as they purchase additional pairs of shoes.

Clothes Hanger Shoe Racks

For these shoe racks, people will need about 3 yards of a sturdy material, a wooden clothes hanger, some scissors, and either a sewing machine or a needle and some thread. First, they will need to cut the material into about a 5 foot long by about 3 foot piece. They then need to cut 8 pieces of material 1 and a half foot wide by 1 foot long. The top of the larger piece of material is to be draped over the bottom of the wooden hanger and secured by sewing it along the bottom. The smaller pieces of material are then sewed onto the large piece of material by sewing 2 across for every foot going down, leaving 6 inches on the top and 6 inches on the bottom. These are to be the pockets that people can place their shoes within. When finished, people can hang the rack on the back of a door or on a wall.

People should first hem the raw edges of the material before beginning the project to prevent it from fraying.
