How to Buy a House

Happy family buying a house

Buying a home is one of the most important investments a person, or family, can make. There are steps to take before you buy a house and things to keep in mind as you go through the process as well.

Check your credit.Your credit score will determine how much of a down payment you will need, what your loan interest rate will be and whether or not the lender is interested in doing business with you. Check your credit reports to make sure all of your personal information, and credit account information, is accurate. Use the information dispute system outlined on the credit report to notify the reporting bureau of any issues.

Federal law mandates that each American consumer is entitled to one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Take advantage of this law to get free credit reports to analyze.

Get pre-qualified.It can be really difficult to purchase a home when you have no idea how much you have to spend. Get your down payment together, and then visit a few lenders to get pre-qualified for your mortgage. Use the personal interviews to determine which lender you want to do business with, and be sure you ask for monthly payment estimates to help you in your personal budgeting. The numbers will not be exact, but they will be close enough for you to use in your house hunt.

Do your homework.

Before you call a real estate agent or start visiting homes that are for sale by owner, do some homework to find out exactly what you can afford. The Internet is full of resources for looking up house prices near you, and you will find free home searching newspapers at your local supermarket. Make lists of the amenities you would like to see in a home, and make note of the different neighborhoods you would like to live in. This is the information you will use to narrow down your search.

Look at several homes.

Even though you know exactly what you want, you still need to look at several homes before you make an offer. Touring different kinds of homes will give you an even better idea of what you can afford, and can help you decide which features are most important.

You should never take the process of buying a home lightly. You will be spending a lot of time and money to find the right home, so prepare yourself as much as you can to make sure you get exactly what you want.
