How To Cure Jock Itch

Jock itch is a fungal infection of the scrotal area and can prove extremely irritating over time if left untreated. It leads to a burning sensation in the folds of skin around the thighs and anus and can produce red, oozy blisters. If you are suffering from jock itch, it is very important that you treat it right away to prevent it from getting worse.

Keep it dry and clean

Fungus needs moisture to grow, so keeping the area dry reduces its growth. Always change underwear after any physical event and at least once per day. Use baby powder or an anti-fungal powder to absorb moisture. Wearing loose clothing also helps keep the area dry and can help the damaged skin repair itself faster. Do not scratch, as this can increase irritation.

Kill any fungal spores on your underwear by washing them in diluted bleach between uses. Never share undergarments or towels, or you risk spreading the infection to others.

Use antifungal creams

There are several over-the-counter creams and powders for the treatment of jock itch. The most common active ingredients are oxiconazole, clotrimazole and miconazole. These all prohibit the fungus from making cell membranes, which prevents its growth and slowly kills it. It may take about two to four weeks of use to cure the infection.

See the doctor

If you are still suffering from jock itch after using over-the-counter creams for two to four weeks, it is time to see a doctor. He or she can prescribe stronger, prescription anti-fungal creams and in some cases, steroid creams to promote healing. Steroids are only used in combination with anti-fungal drugs, or they may actually make the infection worse.

Treating jock itch takes some time and patience. Remember to keep the area clean and dry while applying creams regularly, and you should see a huge improvement in about two weeks.
