How To Dry Clean Your Own Clothes

Wash day for dish towels on a summer day

If you are like most people, you have an assortment of clothes that say "dry clean only." However, the cost of professional dry cleaning adds up quickly. Unless you can get a special discount, it totals up to a fortune. Sometimes you may find yourself tempted to wash these clothes on a gentle cycle; however, even gentle washing can ruin these clothes. Many grocery and department stores offer home kits to enable washing these expensive clothes at home. Practice on "inexpensive" dry clean clothes rather than pricey ones.

Dry cleaning kit

These kits are fairly simple. They contain dry cleaning bags and dry cleaning chemicals. Remove a garment bag and drop a chemical bag into it followed by the article to be cleaned. Seal up the bag. Make sure not to puncture or tear the bag of dry cleaning chemicals. Although they are safe for use on your clothes, they can harm you. Most kits claim to be non-toxic, and most are, but it is best to be cautious. Place it in your dryer on medium heat for 30 minutes or whatever duration the kit indicates. After the dryer completes its cycle, remove the bag and remove the garment. It is as simple as that.

Do not allow dry cleaning chemicals to get on your skin.

Disadvantages

The only downside to cleaning with home kits is that in order to protect consumers from very dangerous chemicals, many of the substances used in the home kits are not as effective as those of professionals. Therefore, they might not work as well. Dry cleaning at home is best for routine objects, like slacks and shirts, and not formal evening wear.

It is always best to allow professionals to dry clean your formal clothes, but washing normal garments at home offers an excellent chance to save some money and time.
