You just built your first computer or you have one that has been infected with viruses. Often the best way is to completely start over from scratch by reinstalling the operating system. Here is what you need to do to get everything up and running smoothly. The first thing to do is to get a copy of the installation CD/DVD for the operating system you want to run, Windows and Mac CDs can be picked up at a computer/electronics store. Linux is a free OS that can be downloaded online.
Before you put that install disk in the PC, you need to back up any data that you want to save including documents, photos, and music. Next, you need to make sure your computer boots to the CD/DVD drive. Most systems require you to hold a key down during boot up. Once that's done, go ahead and insert the disk. Once the install program has loaded, just sit back, and follow the instructions on the screen.
The install program might ask you questions like what time zone you are in, your name, and your desired password. If you are installing a Windows operating system, it will also ask you for a product key which can be found on the CD/DVD case.
After the install program has finished, your computer will reboot, and you are almost ready to go. A very important but often overlooked step is to make sure the computer is set to receive automatic updates. This ensures that any security holes are fixed once your computer is up on running.
The last step is to install an antivirus program. You should do this before you even install a web browser. There are many commercial and free antivirus programs to choose from. All you have to do now is install your programs, restore the files you backed up, and enjoy your brand new operating system.
