But becoming a paralegal is not easy, so you need to have the proper background before you try to land one of these jobs. What can a person do in order to better become a paralegal? Becoming a paralegal is all about developing one's research skills. If you can do that, then you have a great chance of landing one of these jobs.

Getting research-based experience

There are a few different ways that you can develop your research skills.

One of the best ways is to go to either a four year university or a smaller school and study history, political science, or another research-heavy major.

This will let potential employers know that you have hit the books before in order to complete projects. As a paralegal, you will mostly be researching old cases, studying new case law, and putting it all together in a format that is easy to understand for the attorney in charge.

Develop your writing skills

Likewise, you can make yourself competitive for paralegal jobs by developing your writing skills to some extent. You will be expected to write short memos to the attorneys about what you found. Though these won't be going in front of the judge or anything like that, the attorneys will want them to be written well. The better your writing skills, the better off you will be in the long run. Take some writing courses or work on your writing on your own. When you go into an interview with a law firm, be sure to bring a writing sample. It's even better if the writing sample includes some of your own research, too.

Apply widely to many firms

From a more practical perspective, you will want to apply widely to many different law firms. The bigger, corporate law firms often have more openings, but they also value experience more than small firms. The key is to set your net very wide, because you only have to catch one opening. Don't be afraid to get out and network with attorneys, as well, since this can be a real benefit in the hiring process.
