How to Wall Mount Speakers

Wall mounted speakers offer a variety of advantages over traditionally placed speaker systems. If you're setting up surround sound, follow the setup directions provided by your television system. After determining ideal placement, mark the place your speakers will be mounted.

Most newer televisions will provide you with step-by-step instructions regarding surround sound setup. This will usually involve the use of a microphone placed in a certain place within the room. When the desired placement is determined, use a pencil to lightly draw a line along the bottom of the mount plate and make a mark where the screws will need to be placed to affix the mount. Use a simple level to ensure that the lines you draw are straight and level. Measure the distance from floor to your marks and use this as future reference when marking the height and position of other speakers in the room.

Locate the studs in your walls in order to ensure that your wall mounts will be safely affixed. This also ensures that you avoid drilling into electrical wiring within your walls.

Use a stud finder if you have access to one or lightly tap along the width of the wall on which you plan to mount your speakers. When the tapping offers a solid, dull sound rather than a hollow one, it is likely that you have located a stud. Drill a small hole that is only slightly smaller than the hollow wall anchors at the location of your pencil marks. Insert your hollow wall anchors into these holes. Place the mount on the wall, ensuring that the screw holes in the mount align with the anchors. Screw in the wall plate securely.
