How To Write An Essay

Writing essays are a basic element of life for college students. From test questions to final papers, essays form the backbone of coursework for many classes. Writing a sound essay requires a firm understanding of the basics of good essay writing. A well-written, properly researched essay can make all the difference between a good final grade or a bad one.

Parts of an Essay

Every essay begins with an introduction. Since this is your first paragraph, the introduction should capture a reader's attention right away with a thought provoking statement. Newspaper and magazine articles offer good examples of creative ways you can introduce a subject.

Subsequent sentences introduce the essay topic and set up the thesis sentence. With your thesis sentence, you state the specific argument you intend to make with the essay.

After introducing a thesis, the body of the essay presents ideas that support your main thesis. Each idea should be set off in an individual paragraph and backed up with at least two or three sentences worth of evidence or examples supporting the idea in question.

A conclusion paragraph summarizes your essay's main point and reintroduces the argument made in your thesis statement. You can reiterate your main points again, but there is no need to touch on examples you already covered earlier.

Constructing an outline before writing your first draft can help you organize your thoughts more clearly and concisely.

Editing an Essay

An essay is never finished after one draft. You should read through it at least once to check spelling and grammar. When jotting down your thoughts the first time through, they almost never read as crisp or clean as when they first appeared in your mind.

A major part of editing involves checking content for clarity and flow. Compare the body of the essay with your thesis statement. If the ideas presented in the essay do not mesh with your thesis, a re-write of either the thesis statement or those ideas will help both elements compliment one another better.

Reading your essay aloud can help you find and correct grammatical or content errors more easily than if you read it silently.
