Renting a boat can range from renting a small canoe to hiring a full-fledged ship complete with a captain for a multi-day cruise. If you are looking to buy a boat, it is best to try before you buy. However, whatever your needs, there are plenty of details to consider.

Do the research

You should always carefully look up what boat rentals are available on the internet before even stepping out of your door. You should not only try to find the best rental companies but also try to discover what time of year the rental companies are busiest. This enables you to plan your vacation avoiding those times.

Daily rentals

Hundreds of marinas across the states have boats for rent from kayaks to motorboats. Of course, you must meet whatever license requirements the company has before you can just walk out the door with the boat, though most states only require licenses for power boats. Sailboats are a different matter because they require skill and experience to handle; marinas may test you on your ability to command sailboats before you take it off their moorings.

Houseboats

Houseboats are an increasingly popular rental, both for wild parties and for a quiet vacation. They are readily available on many lakes. They are appointed much like rental condos, complete with kitchens and open-air barbeques - some even have waterslides directly into the water!

Charters

Chartering is renting a ship, complete with a captain, for a vacation spent sailing around foreign locales. The Caribbean, with its rich history, beautiful waters and exotic ports, is a popular charter location, but charters are available in any major port city. Just remember, even though you are paying for the captain, they are in charge, not you.
