Senior Independent Living Apartments

The idea of putting a loved one into a nursing home is a hard decision for both the family and the elderly relative, but many options exist that allow far more freedom and independence. Senior independent living apartments have little difference from traditional apartments, and include the same amount of freedom.

Differences from a nursing home

When it comes to senior living, the difference between residential facilities and independent living is essentially the amount of care offered. Nursing homes offer the highest level of constant care. Senior apartments and communities offer more independence, but urgent medical attention and skilled nurses are always on hand.

Senior apartments still offer quality nursing care and attention, although not as much as a nursing home.

Types of senior living apartments

Several types of senior independent apartments offer different features. Independent living apartments present many activities and organizations, but also the lowest amount of onsite medical care. Assisted living apartments give similar options, but staff assist with meals, bathing, housekeeping and other activities. Continuing care facilities offer all the amenities of nursing homes and independent living apartments, allowing seniors to live in one locale during their later years.

Make sure the type of senior apartment is the right one for your loved one.

Apartment design

Senior living apartments are usually created with senior needs in mind, far more than traditional apartments. Bathrooms have support bars and safe shower and tub designs. If more than one level, all senior level apartments have elevators. These designs make a loved one's life easier without intruding on their freedom.

Apartments contain amenities that assist seniors with day to day living.

Going into a nursing home presents families with a traumatic, life-altering event, but choosing the freedom of senior independent living apartments can alleviate some of this stress.
