Shopping For Outdoor Furniture

The right outdoor furniture adds the finishing touch to your patio, porch or gazebo. Think about several key points before you buy to select the best furniture to grace your outdoor area for years to come.

Measure your space

Avoid the frustrating experience of buying a beautiful new set of outdoor furniture, and then finding out it does not fit in your available area. Before you make any purchases, take careful measurements of your deck, porch or other space. Allow extra room for you to walk around the furniture. Then, when you go shopping, check the dimensions of the pieces you prefer, and figure out which ones fit best.

Pick suitable materials

Outdoor furniture comes in a range of materials, such as wrought iron, aluminum, plastic, wicker, teak and cedar. Each kind has advantages and disadvantages that vary depending on the area where you live. For instance, if you reside in an especially rainy region, consider buying plastic or aluminum furniture that resists moisture well. Similarly, wrought iron is heavy enough to withstand high winds and sturdy enough to last for decades. Teak or resin furniture is hardy, and requires relatively little care.

Keep your budget in mind

If money is not an issue, feel free to choose whichever type of furniture strikes your fancy; however, if you are working with a limited budget, take steps to conserve some cash. Consider waiting to buy your outdoor furniture until July or August, which is when many stores hold clearance sales. Also think about buying pieces made of inexpensive materials, such as pine, aluminum or poplar.

Plan ahead for winter; check that you have sufficient storage space for your outdoor furniture, or invest in protective coverings.

One of the first things people notice when they look at your home is your outdoor furniture. Select the chaises, chairs and tables you love to make your yard stand out from the pack.
