Like most people, you will probably want to carve the turkey at the table on its serving dish. Traditionally, that is how it is usually done at festive gatherings for holidays. If you choose to carve it in the kitchen then place it onto a serving dish, you will be able to use a cutting board. The latter is easier for those who are inexperienced at carving turkey. Here we will provide basic knowledge for carving a turkey right at the table or in the kitchen.
First of all, let the bird cool before starting to carve. Usually 20 to 30 minutes is sufficient. The proteins found in meat need time to rest after cooking. If you skip this important step, your bird could be tough and chewy. It is good to baste a few times while it is cooling.
Use a carving fork in conjunction with a sharp carving knife. If your knife is smooth-edged instead of serrated, then take time to sharpen beforehand. The fork will help you to hold the meat in place and avoid accidents or misses with the knife.
Separate the legs from the body first. Insert your knife at the bottom of the body and find the joint that connects the thigh and severe in the middle of the joint. The drumstick can be separated from the thigh, again cutting in the middle of the joint.
More often than not, the drumstick is often preferred on the bone and does not need to be carved. The thigh can be carved, taking care to slice the meat in the same direction that the bone runs.
Next, take the wings off in the same fashion. Find the connecting joint and severe directly in the middle of it. Now you are ready to begin with the breasts. Slice in the same direction as the breast bone and use the fork to steady by holding it backwards against the bone. If cutting on a board, then slice it the long way as if the bone were there.
Do the same for the other side and you are finally ready to dish out the stuffing if you have a stuffed bird. Pull back the skin from the neck if you want to remove the wishbone. Let it dry for a few days to become brittle. As a tradition, the wishbone is pulled apart by two people who make a wish. The person with the larger half after it breaks will get their wish.
