Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Abbreviation: HCMUT) – a member of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City - us still referred to by many as Phú Thọ, is the leading university in teaching and research activities of Vietnam. The university plays the active role in the fields of talents cultivation and providing manpower with strong technical skills to the Southern areas of Vietnam .
HCMUT is a centre of technology - industry and management training. Graduate students from HCMUT have strong professional skills, which are recognized equivalent to those of other advanced countries in the Southeast Asia . The HCMUT training activities have made remarkable contribution to satisfy the requirements of man power for the industrialization and modernization in Vietnam generally and Southern Vietnam areas particularly. Moreover, HCMUT is also the science research and technology transfer center which plays the key role in providing information and applying advanced technologies of developed countries and transferring to concerning industries in the Southern areas of Vietnam .
Up to May 2005, HCMUT has 11 faculties, 10 science research and industry transferring centers, 4 training centers, 10 functioning offices and one limited company. During the past 30 years since the Liberation of South Vietnam and country unification, 45,000 engineers and Bachelors have graduated from our university. Since 1994, we have trained 20,000 Bachelors of Science, 1,503 Masters and 25 Doctors, many of whom are either keeping management roles and or leading experts in state-owned or foreign-investment enterprises of different industries in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces.

History
- 1950s: established on June 29, 1957, the university was known as Phú Thọ National Center of Technology. The center included 4 partner colleges: College of Civil Engineering, College of Electricity Power, Vietnam National Maritime Engineering.
- 1960s: College of Chemistry was established, belonging to Phu Tho National Center of Technology.
- 1970s: In 1972, Phu Tho National Center of Technology was renamed as National Institute of Technology, which was the only center of South Vietnam to train technical engineers and experts.According to the decree 010/SL/VNGDTN signed on January 11, 1974, the National Institute of Technology was merged into Thu Duc Institute of Polytechnique and renamed as University of Technology. In the same year, Thanh Hoa Post Graduate Department (the current Environmental Engineering Faculty) was established in the College of Civil Engineering. It was the first time when the university conducted post graduate training program. After the national reunification, the university was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City University of Polytechnique as Saigon was renamed to Ho Chi Minh City (according to the Decision 426/Ttg signed by The President of the Cabinet on October 2, 1976). Being one of the three largest universities of technology in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City University of Polytechnique has the mission of training engineers majoring in the fields of capital construction, industry, resources exploration and exploitation, and environment preservation to provide a force of manpower mainly for the southern areas of Vietnam.
- 1980s: Since 1981, HCMUT has expanded its scope into postgraduate training. In 1990, HCMUT opened the Master degree training system. Actually, the postgraduate training in HCMUT has been focused since 1981.
- 1990s: According to decision 16/CP by The Prime Minister on January 17, 1995, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) was founded. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology became one among the 9 members of VNU-HCM and was renamed as University of Technology.
- 2000s: According to decision 15/2001/QĐ-TTG and decision 16/2001/QĐ-TTg by The Prime Minister on December 2, 2001, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City was reorganized with 3 members and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology gained back its traditional name as University of Polytechnique.

Infrastructure
The University has two campuses: one is located in the inner of Ho Chi Minh City and the other in the outskirts of the city. The former one has an area of 14.8 ha, of which address is 268 Ly Thuong Kiet St., Dist.10, and HCMC. The campus has 117 classrooms (14.479 m 2), 96 laboratories (12.197 m 2), 3 workshops (6.950 m 2), and 1 library (1.145 m 2 – for both undergraduates and graduates). The latter one, with an area of 26 ha, is located in Linh Trung Ward, Thu Duc Dist., and HCMC. In May 2005, the first building of the campus was started construction with a building area of 17.600 m 2 , totally costing 66 billions VND. Besides the two campuses, HCMUT also has an inner city dormitory with an area of 1,4 ha. As the dormitory was seriously downgraded, it has been torn down for the preparation of building a new one, for which the expenditures are 101 billions VND (of which 50% self-funded by the university and 50% borrowed from the need-enhancing budget of HCM city).
The remarkable event of the past 5 years (from 2001-2005) is that, with the self-funded budget (from tuition fees, science research and technology transfer and other training activities), HCMUT has been focusing on rebuilding an area of 26.128 m 2 (increases 40% in comparison to that of 1995), upgrading classrooms, laboratories, library, of which area is 7.670 m 2 (increases 50% in comparison to that of 1995), investing in equipments for training activities. All classrooms are equipped with projectors and computers, laboratories with modern tools for training and science research activities (worth 80 billions VND).
At HCMUT, documents in different fields for teaching and researching are always available. Among which, 55% (509 titles) are compiled by our professors. There are 277 titles of magazines (191 foreign languages and 86 Vietnamese ones), 9460 titles with more than 36.555 books, 30 computers for internet accessing and lots of free documents in the library. The lib is invested with an annual budget of more than one billion VND for documents and printing curriculum for teaching.
Curriculum
HCMUT is the centre of technology - industry and management training in Ho Chi Minh City. Students who graduated from HCMUT have flexible and professional skills. So, they are easier to find good job in big company after graduation. To require the demand of man power about industrial and technological major in Vietnam and Asian countries, the university trains many excellent students every year. HCMUT is also the science research and technology transfer center which plays the key role in providing information and applying advanced technologies of developed countries and transferring to concerning industries in the Southern areas of Vietnam.

Student Life
It is not expensive to live on-campus. The cost for a decent meal in Ho Chi Minh city is about $2 per student per day. There are luxury restaurant and cheap food-stands provide a wide diversity of choices for students.
Public transportation for traveling around the city can be easily access from the campus. A bus station is located at the school gate.
There are plenty of extracurricular activities on campus too. “Green Summer Campaign” is one of the annual activities of the school. Students participating the campaign will go to remote poor areas to improve the literacy rates and help building the infrastructure of those regions. Freshman students will have an excursion to Cu Chi to learn about the history of the land. There are student Clubs such as English Club, French Club for students with interest in foreign languages; Robot Club for those who like to make robots and exchange experiences to prepare for the annual Robocon (Robot Contests).
Athletics
Here, students can choose to play many kinds of sports for example basketball, volleyball, football, tennis… Ho Chi Minh University of Technology has 3 volleyball courts, 1 football field, 1 tennis court. Students of HCMUT usually take part in sports competition among students in Ho Chi Minh City and sports competition between Faculties.
Achievements
Students of HCMUT have won 208 Olympic prizes in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, Mechanics, Civil and Architecture Engineering over the past ten years. Among those prizes there are 10 First prizes, 29 Second prizes and 72 Third prizes. The school’s students have also brought back the Championship of Asia-Pacific Mini Robots Contest in 2002 (held in Japan).
With the total amount of 314 millions VND, the school has sponsors two high schools of Thanh Hoa City, Long An Province and Khanh Thuong-Khanh Vinh City, Khanh Hoa Province. 225 millions was used by the labor union of HCMUT to build houses of gratitude and 118.6 millions VND was used for building house for unfortunate people over the past 10 years. 253 millions VND is spent for gifts offered to orphanages, charity-schools, disable children and children who suffer from dioxin.
International Partnership and Research Collaboration
The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology has established partnership agreeing on sharing curriculum and creating exchange program. Some of HCMUT’s brightest undergraduate and master’s students will have their PhD research at Illinois.[1]
The Norwegian group, Roxar, has established partnership with HCMUT. Roxar will assist the university in building a high-tech lab. The group also hopes that some students will choose to work for it after they graduate.[2]
