hi-fi hi'-fi' adj.

Color advertisement preprinted on one side of a continuous roll of smooth coated paper, so that the ad resembles a wallpaper pattern, which can be fed into a newspaper's printing press; sometimes called hi-fi insert. The newspaper can then print its own material on the reverse side. Also called a preprint, a hi-fi has been used for color advertising in newspapers because the use of high-speed presses and the porosity of newspaper stock has until recently made high-quality color reproduction impossible. However, today new photographic development technologies exist that make color reproduction on newspaper stock more possible. Hi-fi is short for high-fidelity color.
