Leather straps fastened around the pasterns of horses, mules and donkeys. Placed on all four legs and pulled together by a rope, it provides an effective means of casting the horse. Putting them on the two fore pasterns and fastening them by a short chain restricts the horse's movements so that it cannot run away but can still graze. Called also hopple.

  • breeding h's — leather strap hobbles to tie the front feet together; used chiefly in mares to prevent escape from stallion.
  • crossed h. — a rope is used to tie the forearm of the upper limb of a cast horse to the hindlimb above the hock. The hobbles on the pasterns can then be released and surgical work performed on the hoof.
