Early life

DeBarge began singing when she was 3 years old, but did not begin to take it seriously until she was 12. When she was 12, her father took her into the recording studio. They worked until 4 a.m. recording a duet.[3] This was when DeBarge proved to her father that she was serious about a singing career.

At 13, she was first introduced to the nation. During the summer of 2003 she was a contestant on the American Idol spinoff, American Juniors. DeBarge progressed to the semifinal round of twenty contestants. She was featured in the first group of ten semifinalists and sang the song "Reflection" from the Disney movie Mulan. However, she was not one of the five to progress from that group into the final ten.[4]

At 14, DeBarge was introduced to Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. She worked with him for five years and, on the day before her 19th birthday, signed to a new division of Island Def Jam Records founded by Edmonds and Jeff Burroughs called Sodapop Music.[4]

Career

DeBarge broke into mainstream music with her single "Goodbye". The track samples Steam's 1969 hit "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye".[5] The single was released to radio several weeks before its original impact date. The single was released to iTunes on April 7, 2009 by the Island Def Jam Music Group. The single has fared well on the Billboard music charts. As of June 9, "Goodbye" had peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 after just six weeks on the charts.[6]

DeBarge's debut album will be released by Sodapop Music and Island Records. Many of the tracks were written and produced by Babyface.[7] Preach, Jordan Omley and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder were also involved with songwriting and producing.[8] Her debut album Exposed[9] is scheduled to be released on July 28.[10]

On June 24, it was announced that DeBarge will join Ciara as an opening act for The Circus Starring: Britney Spears.[11]
