Answers.com Doubles Content over Previous Six Months
New Licensed and Original Content Fuels
User Satisfaction, Traffic, and Revenue Growth
New York, NY - February 28, 2006 - Answers Corporation (NASD:
ANSW),
creators of Answers.com, reported this week a substantial increase in the number of available topics over the previous six months, to more than 4 million. The growth was driven by the licensing of new brand-name titles and an expanded focus on the creation of original, topical content.
"This rapid increase to 4 million topics shows that we are expanding our collection of AnswerPages in order to provide our users with the trusted, reliable, and comprehensive information they are looking for," explained Jeff Cutler, Answers' chief revenue officer. "At the same time, we're continuing to add monetizable elements to our AnswerPages, such as advertising and price comparisons, in order to deliver this compelling, premium content for free. Overall usage has increased significantly over the previous six months, in part due to an increase from search engines that find our content valuable," Cutler said. "We have identified a key scalable technique for increasing traffic and revenues: As we add new content titles, we see traffic and revenues rise as more people find what they are looking for. We have an aggressive plan for 2006 to add quality content at a rapid pace. We're especially looking forward to offering authoritative, name-brand content not typically available on any other free site."
Among the new titles that were recently added are a leading legal encyclopedia, and the
Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer, both licensed from Thomson Gale, as well as several other titles covering such diverse topics as word origins, gardening, geology, pop performers' biographies, and
ornithology. Answers Corporation has also extended its long-term agreements with some of its key content partners, such as Houghton Mifflin Company - the source of more than a dozen titles integrated into Answers.com - and the Computer Language Company, publisher of the
Computer Desktop Encyclopedia.
"We are pleased to both extend and expand our strategic partnership with Answers.com," stated David Langevin, vice president and director of electronic markets for Houghton Mifflin's Trade and Reference Division. "Answers' unique business model is a win for both our firms and Internet users everywhere, because users of Answers.com gain access to our authoritative, rich-content titles while we are able to extend our brand to new markets."
The most recently added content from brand-name sources includes the following titles:
- A leading legal encyclopedia, including legal biographies and definitions, published by Thomson Gale
- Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer, published by Thomson Gale
- Pop performers' biographies and album reviews from All Media Guide
- Peterson Field Guide® to Western Birds and Peterson Field Guide® to Rocks and Minerals, published by Houghton Mifflin
- Taylor's Dictionary for Gardeners, published by Houghton Mifflin
- The World in So Many Words, a dictionary of international word origins, published by Houghton Mifflin
- The Chronology of American Literature, a bank of biographies of American authors, published by Houghton Mifflin

To supplement this syndicated content, the Answers.com editorial team has stepped up its effort to write original, unique content. In particular, the team has been producing Resource Centers, thought-provoking overviews of the histories and meanings behind popular (as well as unfamiliar) holidays and events, ranging from the Olympics to Kwanzaa to the Academy Awards.
