Who2 Biography: Guy Ritchie, Filmmaker

  • Born: 10 September 1968
  • Birthplace: Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England
  • Best Known As: The director of Snatch and Madonna's ex-husband

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is known for his modern take on British gangster movies and for being married to pop star Madonna. Ritchie got his start behind the camera in the mid-1990s, making promotional music videos and television commercials. His 1995 short The Hard Case -- and a script for a feature film based on it -- convinced a handful of wealthy investors (including Trudie Styler, Sting's wife) to finance his first movie. Ritchie made Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (1998) on a small budget with mostly unknown actors; it became a box office hit and he was suddenly being compared to Quentin Tarantino. He was also making news as Madonna's boyfriend and father to her son, Rocco (b. 11 August 2000). Ritchie and Madonna married in December of 2000 and settled in England, much to the delight of the British gossip sheets, who report regularly on their doings. His next movie, Snatch (2000), had major studio backing and big-name stars like Brad Pitt and Benicio Del Toro. It performed well at the box office and furthered Ritchie's reputation as an exciting writer/director. He then worked with his wife on three projects: a music video ("What It Feels Like for a Girl"), a short film for BMW ("Star," with Clive Owen) and a poorly-received remake of the 1974 film Swept Away (2002). In 2005 he finished Revolver, a crime thriller starring Ray Liotta and Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000 of the hip-hop band Outkast). He followed with the cash-frenzy action comedy RocknRolla (2008).

Ritchie and Madonna adopted a 13-month-old son, David Banda, from the African country of Malawi in 2006... Ritchie and Madonna announced in late 2008 that they would divorce.

Biography

A director who had more of a critical and financial success with his first film than many of his colleagues have had over the course of their entire careers, Guy Ritchie became one of Britain's most talked-about directors on the strength of his 1998 debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. A highly stylized crime caper/black comedy set in London's East End, it inspired favorable comparisons to films ranging from Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs to the Hong Kong crime spectaculars of John Woo.

The film's decidedly irreverent sensibility was an appropriate one, given the background of its director. Born in London in 1968, Ritchie hails from a proudly working-class background and never attended film school. He regarded the work of most film school graduates as "unwatchable and boring" and the British film industry as suffering from a creative void. Feeling strongly compelled to fill this void, Ritchie thus embarked on Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. It was to be a long and difficult journey, as the director and his producer struggled for three years to find funding and repeatedly met with rejection from various members of the British film establishment. Finally, salvation came through in the form of PolyGram, and the film's eventual huge success all but ensured that Ritchie would never have to endure similar funding hardship again.

Ritchie followed up Lock, Stock with Snatch, another crime caper, this time set in London's Jewish diamond district. With a cast that featured many of the Lock, Stock players and American support from the likes of Brad Pitt and Benicio Del Toro, the 2000 feature was treated with significant anticipation on both sides of the Atlantic. Though many viewed Snatch as a simple carbon-copy of his previous success, the film nevertheless retained the giddy energy and humor that had made Lock, Stock so successful and found both Pitt and Del Toro at their quirky best.

Wed to Madonna in December of 2000, the duo would soon find themselves working together while collaborating on a remake of the 1974 Lina Wertmuller comedy Swept Away. Yet another in the long running series of cinematic mishaps for the sultry pop diva, Swept Away (2002) survived a mere fortnight in stateside theaters before being relegated a straight to video release in Ritchie's native England. On a more positive note, the happy couple gave birth to their first child, Rocco, in early August of 2000. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Early life

Ritchie was born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire,[1] the second of two children born to Amber (née Parkinson) and John Vivian Ritchie, an advertising executive.[2][3] Ritchie, who is dyslexic, was expelled from Stanbridge Earls School, one of the most prominent institutions specialising in dyslexia in the UK, at the age of 15.[1] He has stated that drug use was the reason for the expulsion; his father, however, has said that it was because his son was caught "cutting class and entertaining a girl in his room."[4]

In addition to his elder sister, Tabitha, a dance instructor, Ritchie has a half-brother, Kevin Bayton, who was born to Amber Parkinson when she was a teenager and given up for adoption.[5][6] From 1973 until 1980, when they divorced,[4][7] Ritchie's mother was married to Sir Michael Leighton, 11th baronet. As a divorcée, she is correctly styled as Amber, Lady Leighton.

Directing career

Ritchie directed a 20-minute short film in 1995 entitled The Hard Case. His first full-length feature was the successful Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998. He was introduced to Madonna when the soundtrack to "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" was issued on her Maverick Records label. Recalling Quentin Tarantino, The Sting and The Italian Job, the film was widely praised for its wit[citation needed]. It also introduced actor Jason Statham (The Transporter) to worldwide audiences, and introduced former footballer Vinnie Jones to a new career as a film star. In 2000 Ritchie won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay. Ritchie created and produced a spin-off television series called Lock, Stock....[8]

His second feature film was Snatch, released in the year 2000. Originally known as Diamonds, it was another caper comedy, this time backed by a major studio following the previous success of Lock, Stock[citation needed]. The cast featured such Hollywood big names as Brad Pitt, Benicio del Toro and Dennis Farina, along with the returning Vinnie Jones and Statham. Similar to "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" in featuring a complex and inventive storyline in which the characters weave in and out of each others' lives, the film also plays with time, depicting events from various perspectives. It currently has a rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, being widely viewed as too similar to his debut in both thematic content and performance, with Roger Ebert noting: "I don't care if he returns to the kind of material that worked for him the first time around. I just want him to get organized, to find the through line, to figure out why we would want to see the movie for more than its technique."

Ritchie accompanied Madonna to the debuts of her film The Next Best Thing and album Music. Following his marriage to Madonna, Ritchie began focusing his filmmaking on his famous wife, directing her in both a music video (for the song "What It Feels Like for a Girl," a controversial video that showed Madonna engaging in violent behaviour, ostensibly directed at men, including T-boning a car with three men in it, tasering and robbing a man at an ATM, scratching a police car and shooting two officers with a water gun, driving her car through a group of men playing street hockey and incinerating a man by throwing a lighter into a pool of gasoline) and a short film, "Star", for the BMW films series. Ritchie's next film, also featuring Madonna, was a remake of the 1974 Lina Wertmüller hit Swept Away (also entitled Swept Away). Ritchie cast Madonna as a rich, rude, socialite who, after a shipwreck, is trapped on a deserted island with a slovenly Communist sailor who humiliates her. Ritchie renamed the woman Amber Leighton after his mother. This film was both a critical and commercial disappointment. He later accompanied Madonna to the debuts of her films Die Another Day, I'm Going To Tell You A Secret, Arthur and the Invisibles, and I Am Because We Are, as well as her West End play debut in Up For Grabs. Madonna supported her husband by attending the debuts of Ritchie's films Snatch, Revolver, and RocknRolla.

Ritchie's next project was a Vegas-themed heist film entitled Revolver, which was critically panned.[9][10]

Another project Guy Ritchie was involved with was a hidden camera show called Swag, for channel Five in the UK, which turned the table on criminals and opportunists by using stunts to trap them in the act.

Ritchie has also written and directed RocknRolla starring Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, Jeremy Piven, Thandie Newton, and Tom Wilkinson.[11] Ritchie will also direct a film based on a comic book series he created with Virgin Comics entitled Guy Ritchie's Gamekeeper. The film rights were acquired by Warner Brothers in July 2007. The film's being produced by Silver Pictures.[12]

In 2008, Ritchie directed a commercial for Nike called "Take It To The Next Level", about a young Dutch footballer who signs for Arsenal, showing the progression of his career from his viewpoint, until he makes his debut for the Netherlands. The commercial features cameo appearances from some football players with music by Eagles of Death Metal.[13]

Personal life

Ritchie (left centre) with his then wife Madonna (right)

On 22 December 2000, he married the American pop singer and actress Madonna at Skibo Castle in Scotland. They have a son, Rocco, born 11 August 2000 in Los Angeles, California, and adopted a Malawi baby boy named David. On 15 October, 2008, British media reported that a split was "imminent" between Ritchie and Madonna.[14] The split was confirmed by their spokesperson[15] and Ritchie and Madonna went public with the split because they "can’t bear to live with the pretence any longer".[16]

On 18 May 2000, Ritchie was arrested by the police after he assaulted a 20-year-old man outside the Kensington home he shared with Madonna, causing actual bodily harm.[17]

Ritchie was the inspiration for, and is the subject of, singer Robbie Williams' single "She's Madonna" from his 2006 album Rudebox.

During his marriage to Madonna he followed Kabbalah and was a regular attendee of services at the Kabbalah Centre which his former wife is heavily involved in. Although Ritchie is no longer affiliated with Kabbalah his children are still raised according to the teachings.

Ritchie started training in Shotokan karate at the age of seven at the Budokwai in London, where he later achieved a black belt in judo.[18] He also has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.[19] Ritchie is a fan of Chelsea Football Club.[20]

Madonna and Guy Ritchie's marriage was dissolved by District Judge Reid by decree nisi at the clinical Principal Registry of the Family Division in High Holborn, London. Madonna and Ritchie entered into a compromise agreement for Rocco and David, then aged eight and three respectively, and divided the children's time between Ritchie’s London home and Madonna’s in New York, where the two will be joined by her daughter Lourdes, from a previous relationship.[21][22]

On 15 December 2008, it was announced by Madonna's spokeswoman that the singer had agreed a divorce settlement with Ritchie, the terms of which grant him between £50million and £60million, a figure that includes the value of the couple's London pub and residence and Wiltshire estate in England.[23]
