• Langley, a powerful Lancashire family who owned much land around Middleton and Prestwich near Manchester from the 14th Century, descended from the de Langleys, who came to Britain with William the Conqueror. The family included:
  • Sir Robert Langley, appointed Dean of York in 1386, though his appointment was blocked by Pope Boniface IX due to his part in the murder of King Richard II
