Tver' (tvĕr)

A city of west-central Russia on the Volga River northwest of Moscow. Settled around a fort established in the 12th century, it was a powerful principality in the 13th and 14th centuries and is today an industrial center and a major port. Tver' was named Kalinin from 1931 to 1992 in honor of M.I. Kalinin, a Soviet president. Population: 407,000.
