| Hacker Slang: plonk |
[Usenet: possibly influenced by British slang ‘plonk’ for cheap booze, or ‘plonker’ for someone behaving stupidly (latter is lit. equivalent to Yiddish schmuck)] The sound a newbie makes as he falls to the bottom of a kill file. While it originated in the newsgroup talk.bizarre, this term (usually written “*plonk*”) is now (1994) widespread on Usenet as a form of public ridicule.
| Wine Lover's Companion: plonk |
[PLONGK] Slang for ordinary low-quality wine, referring to any cheap wine, red or white. Over the years plonk has had various meanings, at one time referring specifically to cheap, strong, fortified wine. The term was coined by Australians during World War I as they drank French vin blanc continuing to massacre and abbreviate the words "vin blanc," which ended up as "plonk." The word plonk is commonly used in Australia and Great Britain and, to some extent, in the United States.
