Rainier
A mountain named by Captain George Vancouver
† who surveyed this part of the west coast of North America in 1792, after Rear Admiral Peter Rainier (1742–1808). Rainier, later a vice admiral and Vancouver's mentor in the British Royal Navy, never saw the mountain. There is a city with this name in Oregon, also named after the admiral. The Native American name is
Tacoma 'mountain'.
